We’re very proud of our Student Dáil here at GBMDS. The Dáil is made up of 2 students from each class from 2nd class to 6th class, one male and one female where possible and a member of staff. The Student Dáil is there to represent the views of the students. We meet once a month. We have an agenda for our meeting and it usually involves going through any suggestions that were added to the Suggestion Boxes in each classroom, discussing new ideas and contacting anyone who can help us out. We regularly contact the Parents’ Association, the teachers or Eddie, our Principal, for further information.
Democracy is very important to us and our Student Dáil ensures that the voices of the children are heard. It helps us to promote equality, justice and inclusion. The Student Dáil members work hard – they run the Golden Clock award which encourages punctuality in the school, they operate our Yard Library every Wednesday, they help out with our Winter and Summer shows and our Winter and Summer Fairs too.
Every year, we hold a fundraiser for a charity that is chosen by the children of the school. We hold a bake sale, which is always very popular. We also ask the children of GBMDS to submit articles for the Student Dáil Times. This is our newspaper, with articles on current affairs, book reviews, tips, top tens, cartoon strips etc.
Being a member of the Student Dáil is a great opportunity for the children in Griffith Barracks MDS!
